When one makes up a clinical study, after posing a question to be answered by means of the data obtained by research, one can define the population to be studied. As it is not possible in general to evaluate all the population studied, one can select a sample. Sampling is when the analysis is performed based in a (representative) part of a population. In this stage, it is important to bear in mind that the only form of guarantee the […]

Objective: To compare the influence of two techniques for corneal epithelial removal in photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) – blunt scrape versus rotary brush – regarding duration of technique application, intraoperative comfort, and reepithelization. Methods: This prospective randomized study included 58 eyes of 29 patients that underwent simultaneous and sequential PRK in both eyes – blunt scrape (scraped group) in one eye and rotary brush (brushed group) in the fellow eye. Results: The faster technique, measured in seconds, was the rotary brush […]

Four hundred and thirty one cornea from transplant receptors in Rio de Janeiro were analised, most of them received from Banco de Olhos, associated to Brazilian Society of Ophtalmology (SBO) and from Rio-transplante, after temporary closing of Banco de Olhos. There is a markable difference between the percentual and incidence from the most important causes founded in this work, all of them prooved by histopathology, and the causes reported in bibliography at Sorocaba, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Manaus and Recife, based […]

Objective: To evaluate the influence of a three-minute application of 0.02% mitomycin C (MMC) on proliferation and differentiation of rabbit corneal epithelial cells. Methods: Topical MMC or 0.9% saline solution was applied to the episclera of the temporal limbal area of both eyes, maintaining intact epithelial tissue in one eye, and after partial corneal deepithelialization in the contralateral eye. The animals were arranged in groups A (20 eyes), B (16 eyes) and C (14 eyes) and sacrificed respectively on the […]

Recurrent multifocal conjunctival melanoma originated from preexisting nevus is extremely rare: it occurs in one out of five million individuals. The investigation of this disease is extremely important due to its potential lethality. Thus, this study aims to describe a case of recurrent multifocal conjunctival melanoma originated from preexisting pigmented nevus, which occurred in the city of Patos de Minas, state of Minas Gerais. This is a case study and literature review. Histopathological diagnosis and early staging of the conjunctival […]

Cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is a rare condition, usually results from a late complication of an infection of the paranasal sinuses. Other causes include prothrombotic disorders, anemia and trauma. The signs and symptoms are extremely varied and nonspecific, being the diagnosis made through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The authors present a 75-year-old woman, admitted in the emergency room complaining of ocular pain in the right eye (RE), red eye and frontal headache. She presented on ophthalmic examination of the RE: […]

Iodotherapy represents the radioactive iodine therapy. The beta radiation emitted by radioactive iodine are particles that will be stored in the thyroid tissue destroying cancer cells that were left after surgery (thyroidectomy). It is important to emphasize a possible deleterious effect of therapy which affects the mucosa of the lacrimal system which results in a process of vascular inflammation and scarring producing disorders hypovascular, hypocellular and hypoxic.
