He underwent the Vestibular de Medicina, in 1966, obtained the twenty-fourth position at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Minas Gerais and the seventy-second classification at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, graduating in Medicine, at UFMG, in 8 December 1970, in thirteenth place, between one hundred and sixty-six students. In 1972, he competed for the XIV Specialization Course in Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, obtaining the third place among more than forty registered candidates. He completed the Specialization Course on March 1, 1974, qualifying for the title of Specialist before the Examining Commissions of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology. On July 23, 1977, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine and obtained, unanimously, the grade 10 (ten), having been recommended the publication of his work in full, by the Examining Committee. He went to London, in August 1977, as a fellow at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq, for a Post-Doctoral Course. In the Department of Experimental Ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology, he worked with Professor E.S. Perkins for six months, investigating the relationship between refraction, eye diameters and glaucomas. At Moorfields Eye Hospital, he worked at the Glaucoma Unit for 18 months, and attended several other departments. In September 1979, he did an internship in Moscow, for two weeks, at the Laboratory of Experimental and Clinical Problems of Eye Surgery, under the guidance of Professor S. Fyodorov, studying technical and surgical aspects of intraocular lenses and refractive keratotomy in the treatment of myopia. From March 1979 until January 1992 he was the head of the Glaucoma Department at the Hilton Rocha Institute, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Since March 1983, he has been Adjunct Professor, by competition, of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where he was Head of the Vascular Diseases Sector (Depto. Retina) until 1990. Since 1989 he has been Coordinator of the Ophthalmology Course (Graduation). He was founder of the Brazilian Glaucoma Society, together with Dr. José Carlos Reys in 1983, having been its President in the 1983-85 biennium and organizer of the 1st International Symposium of SBG. He was rapporteur for the Official Theme of the XXV Brazilian Congress of Ophthalmology and the 17th Pan American Congress of Ophthalmology, held from September 03 to 06, 1989, having been responsible for the publication of the book Glaucomas Secundários. Since January 1992 he has worked at the Instituto de Olhos de Belo Horizonte (an institution that he designed and built together with other partners, Drs. Cleber Godinho and Elisabeto Ribeiro Gonçalves) where he is the General Director. Since that same time he has been the Head of the Departments of Glaucoma and Cataract. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Cataracts and Intraocular Implants, elected for the 2004-2006 biennium. He was Vice-President of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology in two biennia: 1991-1993 and 2007-2009.
