Graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Uberlândia, and after his Medical Residency at Hospital da Lagoa in Rio de Janeiro, he studied for 5 years the Fellowship in Retinal Vitreous Diseases at Harvard Medical School and Retina Foundation in Boston, USA. He defended a Doctoral Thesis at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). He is, nationally and internationally, known for his academic, social, educator work and scientific research in the area of Clinic and Retinal Surgery, in his more than 30 years of work. He is currently Full Professor of the Ophthalmology Sector at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) and President of the Brazilian Vision Center (CBV), in Brasília and of the Brazilian Center for Eye Surgery (CBCO) and Institute of Surgery a Laser (ICL), in the city of Goiânia, Goiás, ranked among the largest ophthalmological hospitals in Latin America. Under his guidance, more than 500 doctors completed the Post-Graduation lato sensu (Medical Residency in Ophthalmology and Fellowship) and stricto sensu (Master and Doctorate). He was President of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) and the Brazilian Society of Retina and Vitreous (SBRV) and remains active as a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Pan American Academy of Ophthalmology (PAAO), American Society Retina Specialists (ASRS), among other national and international medical societies. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of PAAO and ASRS. In Brazil, he founded the Reference Center in Ophthalmology (CEROF) at UFG – a university institution of great national importance for assistance, teaching, research and extension, of which he is the general director. At CEROF / UFG, he coordinated Public Health campaigns, bringing free ophthalmological care in the west center to more than 1.5 million needy people in the last 16 years
As President of the CBO (representative of the 17,000 Brazilian ophthalmologists), he idealized and has coordinated, every 2 years, the National Eye Health Forums held at the National Congress, in Brasilia. The results have been important in the allocation of financial resources for the implementation of public policies aimed at preventing blindness in Brazil. His academic participation extends to the field of scientific research and his performance is remarkable at the international level, participating in the main international multicentric studies on Retinal Diseases. His main lines of research are: Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vascular Occlusions, Retinal Stem Cells in Animal Model and Vitreous-Retinal Surgery Techniques. He has published about 180 articles in scientific journals and is the author of 21 books and about 300 book chapters. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Retina Journal, in the United States. He chaired 4 Brazilian Ophthalmology Congresses (1997, 2007, 2016 and 2020) which, due to the large number of participants, are among the largest in the world. He coordinated the Retina program at the World Congress of Ophthalmology (WCO), in 2006, in Brazil. His professional, academic and research activities; his work in education, his work in social and community action earned him several awards in Brazil and abroad, among which stands out the Senior Achievement Award of 2010, granted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Professor Doctor Marcos Pereira de Ávila is married, father of 5 children and works in Ophthalmology in Brasília and Goiânia.
