Graduated in Medicine at the University of São Paulo (1979), resided in Ophthalmology at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical School of USP (1980-1982), doctorate in Ophthalmology at the University of São Paulo (1992) and Free Teaching in Ophthalmology at the University of São Paullo (1997). He held a year of clinical Fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Connecticut, in Farmington, USA (1982-1983) and another at the University of California, San Francisco, USA (1983-1984), in the latter under the guidance of Prof. William F. Hoyt. He is currently Associate Professor-3 of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo, head of the Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbit Diseases services at the Hospital das Clínicas of the USP School of Medicine, Coordinator of the Ophthalmology graduate program University of São Paulo and responsible for the Ophthalmology Research Laboratory (LIM-33) at the USP Medical School. He is also a supervisor of the graduate course in Ophthalmology at USP. Orientation completed by 19 doctoral students, 6 undergraduate students with scholarships from funding agencies and 6 postdoctoral supervisions. He currently supervises 4 doctoral students and supervises two postdoctoral students. He published 231 complete scientific papers, 5 books and 158 book chapters. Published articles received 2418 citations in the Institute for Scientific Information (index H = 28), 3033 citations in Scopus (index h = 29) and 4483 citations in Google Scholar (Index h = 37, Index i10 = 100). He is a consultant for the agencies FAPESP, CNPq and CAPES, Associate Editor of the Journal of Ophthalmology, member of the editorial board of the journals Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia and Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia. In addition, he serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for several scientific journals including: Acta Ophthalmologica, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Clinical Psychiatry, Brazilian Archives of Ophthalmology, BMC Neurology, BMC Ophthalmology, Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, British Journal of Ophthalmology , Clinics, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Eye, Graefe? Educational activities include teaching medical students, residents in Ophthalmology and Neurology and Interns at the Neurophthalmology and Orbit Diseases services at Hospital das Clínicas, USP Medical School, for the past 35 years. Active participation in the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology as secretary, general secretary and member of the teaching (former coordinator) and scientific commissions of that entity. In addition to acting as a teacher and researcher, he works as an Ophthalmologist, with an emphasis on Neurophthalmology and Orbital Diseases, acting mainly on the following topics: diseases of the optic nerves (especially optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy and papilledema and compressive neuropathies) , affections of the optical chiasma and retroquiamatic pathway, oculomotor paralysis, Graves’ Orbitopathy, Tumors of the Orbit, and differential diagnoses in neurophthalmology including that of visual loss and diplopia to be clarified working in its own office and in several Hospitals including Hospital Sirio Libanez , Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, Hospital Nove de Julho and Hospital Santa Cruz de São Paulo.
