Mauricio B. Pereira, MD, Ph.D.is an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in Rio de Janeiro since 2009. Since 2001 he has been a visiting professor at the Lato Sensu Postgraduate Course at the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology, in association with the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Uni-Rio) and Universidade Estácio de Sá (UNESA). Did he graduate as a doctor from the traditional and prestigious Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1994 and, in 1996, obtained certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)? United States Medical Licensing Examination. He was approved in a public exam for the realization of Medical Residency in Ophthalmology by the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado, where he started the Medical Residency in Ophthalmology in Brazil in the 1950s. Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), defending his PhD thesis in Visual Sciences (Ph.D.) with maximum grade, at 29 years of age. Maurício was awarded the Lions Health Prize in 1995 and an honorable mention by the Brazilian Society of Retina and Vitreous in 1998 for co-authoring the CD-ROM on Retinal Adhesion Mechanisms. He started his training in the Retina and Vitreous area in 1997 at the Federal University of São Paulo , with professors Dr. Michel Farah and Dr. Rubens Belfort Jr., recognized as one of the best schools of ophthalmology in the country. He then complemented his training at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2000, with the distinguished professor Dr. Harry W. Flynn. His main activity as a specialist is the treatment of several vitreoretinal conditions, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, complications from cataract surgery and macular diseases. Over more than 20 years of ophthalmic practice, he has performed thousands of procedures in his field of knowledge. Recently, he was also certified as a medical expert by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). Mauricio is entitled to be a member of several National Medical Entities, such as the Brazilian Council and the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology, the Brazilian Society of Retina and Vitreous, in addition to participating in representation commissions in these entities. He was also an International Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has also been a member of the editorial boards of the Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia and Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia for more than 15 years, among other scientific journals. Participated as a member of the Research Ethics Committee of Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro (UFF) for 3 years. His contributions in the medical field include direct participation in the training of more than 80 ophthalmologists, as residents or retinal fellows. As a speaker in 86 lectures at national and international congresses, 17 scientific papers in indexed journals, 4 book chapters, 8 abstracts in scientific meetings, participation in 143 meetings, 8 doctoral councils, 14 master’s councils, 6 undergraduate councils and 54 participation in other medical councils, such as the panel of judging committees, course evaluations, selection processes and editorial reviews. Dr. Maurício Pereira has performed more than 8,000 eye surgeries and has made a significant contribution to the treatment of eye diseases and the prevention of blindness. His main interests are retina, vitreous, posterior segment trauma, complications of cataract surgery, surgical treatment of macular diseases.
