Graduated in MEDICINE from the Federal University of Piauí (1974), PhD in Ophthalmology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1979) and Post-Doctorate in the United States (1994). Full Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and Full Professor at UNIFESP. Specialization in Business Management from Fundação Dom Cabral – PUC Minas Gerais. Member of the Editorial Board of the Brazilian Archives of Ophthalmology, Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia, Revista Saúde da Univ. Federal University of Santa Maria and the Medical Magazine of Minas Gerais. Expertise in Ophthalmology in the areas of adult and child glaucoma, cataracts, ultrasonic biomicroscopy, trabeculectomy, valve implantation, ocular hypotonia and visual field. He received 34 awards: one for the best original scientific work published in 2012 in Vision Pan-America (The Pan-American Journal of Ophthalmology), 32 in congresses (26 for the presentation of Free Themes and six for the presentation of Posters), one, for one Startup and an Honorable Mention for Free Theme. Two of his PhD students have received award-winning works, “Arvo International Travel Grant” (2008 and 2009), in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Titular Member of Chair 27 of the Academia Mineira de Medicina and Corresponding Member of the Valencian Academy of Letters. He has 117 complete works published in national and international magazines, five books (including an e-BooK at Apple and the translation and updating of a book into Spanish at Researchgate), 42 book chapters and 63 “Abstracts” in the ARVO annals ( Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology “). He has two patent deposits at UFMG. He supervised two Post-Doctoral Residency students; 28 Doctoral theses (two as co-supervisor), a Master’s dissertation, two Specialization monographs and 43 Scientific Initiation students (15 PIBIC fellows, 8 PROBIC fellows, 3 PROEX fellows and 15 non-fellows – ICV) Currently, he is supervising a PhD student.
