Evaluation of the anteroposterior diameter of children’s eyes
DOI: 10.37039/1982.8551.20260012
ABSTRACT
Objective:
To assess whether the anteroposterior diameter growth curve in Brazilian children aligns with the Caucasian-European standard used as a reference in Brazil. To evaluate the feasibility of using non-cycloplegic refractometric measurements from an autorefractor based on the anteroposterior diameter for medical prescription.
Methods:
A prospective, cross-sectional pilot study was conducted with children receiving care through the Brazilian Unified Health System at the Hospital de Olhos do Paraná. Examinations included visual screening, anamnesis, cycloplegic refraction, fundoscopy, measurement of the anteroposterior diameter, keratometry, autorefraction without cycloplegia using Myopia Master®. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics.
Results:
A total of 44 eyes from children (mean age: 8.2 years; 54.5% girls) were evaluated. The mean anteroposterior diameter was 22.76 mm, aligning with the Caucasian standard. Medical prescriptions and autorefractor measurements showed high agreement in the spherical variable.
Conclusion:
The anteroposterior diameter in Brazilian children follows the Caucasian standard. Future studies should evaluate the necessity of cycloplegia.
