ABSTRACT

Objective:

To evaluate the sociodemographic and ophthalmological characteristics of patients with Ahmed Valve implantation, as well as the postoperative evolution.

Methods:

Cross-sectional observational study, in which 85 patients were selected to compose the sample, data were collected through electronic medical records.

Results:

The average age was 57.3 years. There was a higher prevalence of males at 65.9%. The majority of patients were from other regions of the state, had incomplete primary education and had systemic diseases. The most common types of glaucoma were neovascular and glaucoma secondary to silicone oil. Surgical success was achieved in more than 70% of patients and the mean IOP value decreased from 37.7 mmHg preoperatively to 19.5 mmHg after six months of follow-up with statistical significance. The average number of hypotensive drugs used by impaired patients went from 2.73 before surgery to 1.93 after 180 days. Complications occurred in less than 10% of patients.

Conclusion:

More than 80% of the sample had comorbidities, with systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus being the most prevalent. Neovascular glaucoma secondary to diabetes mellitus was the most common type of glaucoma and most patients had successful surgery.
