Visual disability and blindness have significant individual repercussions, since vision is the prevalent sense used by humans at all life stages. (–) The impact of these conditions on individuals’ families, caregivers, health systems and, finally, on society as a whole, is also significant. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that more than 2 billion individuals worldwide have some visual disability type and that at least 1 billion of these cases could have been prevented. Abstract Objective: To evaluate the inhibition of fibroblast proliferation in vitro of conjunctiva obtained by excision of pterygium from patients using mitomycin (MMC) and cyclophosphamide (CF). Methods: Pterygiums were removed from 7 patients and subjected to cell culture. After cell cultivation, 3 fragments of equal dimensions of these tissues were collected from adjacent areas of each patient removed pterygium. They were randomly selected in such a way that one fragment of each patient was exposed to: the culture medium (group […]

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the epidemiological and clinical profile and economic impact of the acute conjunctivitis outbreak in the period of 2017-2018 in Recife-PE. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on the analysis of medical records of patients diagnosed with conjunctivitis at the emergency room of the Altino Ventura Foundation (FAV) between December 2017 and March 2018. The collected data included ocular manifestations at examination, subsequent complications, management, and days of sick leave. Results: Out of 12,712 patients assisted at FAV from […]

ABSTRACT Objective: To observe clinically, in rabbits, the side effects of topical injection of subconjunctival cyclophosphamide, studying its role as an antifibrotic drug. Methods: Prospective study in 20 albino rabbits of New Zealand race. All rabbits were treated with cyclophosphamide, 10mg/ml in a volume of 0.3 ml, in the left eye through subconjunctival injection. They were evaluated for 1, 7, 30, and 60 days after the procedure. All the animals were examined for the detection of ocular reactions such as […]

ABSTRACT Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disorder that affects extremely premature infants and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in childhood. Objective: This study presents a review of Cochrane systematic reviews about ROP. Methods: We analyzed and summarized the results of all intervention, prevention and treatment, from Cochrane Systematic Reviews (SR) for ROP designed to the highest standard of rigor to show the current position and propose studies that are missing for decision making. Results: […]

ABSTRACT Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is characterized by the development of venous and/or arterial thrombosis and by gestational morbidity (recurrent fetal losses) in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who was diagnosed with primary APS from thromboembolic abnormalities in the retinal periphery that led to retinal ischemia. The aim of this study is to share with physicians and medical undergraduates an atypical manifestation of the syndrome that is the most common acquired thrombophilia, […]

ABSTRACT X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) is a vitreoretinal degeneration caused by mutations in the RS1 gene, generally characterized by bilateral maculopathy and peripheral retinoschisis leading to progressive visual loss during the first 2 decades of life and complications like retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. Herein, we present late ophthalmology findings in a XLRS patient.

ABSTRACT To relate a case not described previously in the national multilateral ophthalmological literature of Descemet’s membrane. A 59-year-old pseudophakic woman diagnosed with bullous keratopathy underwent penetrating keratoplasty with an unusual finding of multiple layers of Descemet’s membrane, which were variable in shape and thickness. In addition, ovoid bodies with negative Gocott-Gomori (GMS) color were present. Discussion and Conclusion: As Descemet’s membrane has a fetal and a postnatal period in its development, it is frequently and well identifiable in histological […]

ABSTRACT The laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most widely used refractory surgical method in the world with excellent results, but this method is not without risks. Post-LASIK ectasia is a serious complication and is characterized by a progressive increase in curvature and thinning of the cornea, resulting in irregular astigmatism and decreasing visual acuity. Its incidence in the current literature is approximately 0.033%. The main treatment for this complication is the implantation of an intra-stromal ring with crosslinking. […]

ABSTRACT At the end of the twentieth century, with the emergence of new technologies and new space programs, aerospace medicine gained prominence in the scientific community since studies related to changes in human physiology in space have become increasingly necessary for the maintenance of cosmonaut health. The eyes are considered one of the most sensitive structures in the body to vascular, structural and biochemical changes caused by microgravity and cosmic radiation. In this sense, this narrative review seeks to identify […]
