From the clinical point of view ophthalmology in Portugal reached levels of quality and excellence that rival with the best reference centers in the world, with very skilled and distinguished professionals. Regarding research and scientific development, although it has been a long way, it seems clear that the scientific production indicators are still below the existing potential and infrastructure in the country […].

Purpose: To determine the safety and efficacy of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) for progressive keratoconus in patients aged between 9 and 14 years old. Methods: Sixteen eyes of 11 patients (8 male and 3 female) with progressive keratoconus underwent epithelium-off CXL according to the standard Dresden protocol. Mean follow-up was 26 months (range, 12 to 60 months). Pre- and postoperative examinations included: uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), corneal topography, tonometry, refraction, corneal pachymetry, and endothelium cell […]

PubMed, Scopus, Google Acadêmico e ISI-Web of Science. A partir de16 estudos acessados, 3 compuseram a amostra final. Todos os trabalhos da amostra final relataram alterações oculares em pacientes com FL/PNS. Os artigos relataram respectivamente […]

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis whose etiologic agent is Toxoplasma gondii, which is characterized as an infectious disease of worldwide distribution. There are thought to be more than 2 billion people globally infected with toxoplasmosis. It is well known that toxoplasmosis is a frequent cause of chorioretinal scarring. In this group of diseases, the angiographic examination (or retinal fluorescein angiography) is very important for diagnosis. Objective: To perform a survey on the prevalence of chorioretinal scars in angiography at a private […]

The aim of this study was to analyze the demographic parameters, clinical manifestations, treatment and the major ocular complications in patients with ocular sarcoidosis. Methods: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study that included patients with the diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis, followed by inflammatory ophthalmology and immune-mediated disease consults at the Prof. Doutor Fernando Fonseca Hospital, between 2009 and 2015. Objective: To evaluate acute eye irritation in rabbits following topical administration of essential oil. Methods: animals were divided into three groups, each containing three rabbits, with a total of 6 eyes per group. The difference between them was the concentration used (1, 3 and 9%). A single dose of 0.1 ml of the product was applied into the conjunctival sac of one eye of the animal, and the contralateral eye was used as control. The effects caused by the essential […]

The authors describe two cases of fungal keratitis which, upon histopathological examination, are found to have in common the absence of epithelium, without ulceration and the lack of integrity of the Bowman’s layer with the presence of fungal forms in their interior. Through them the authors suggest probable mechanisms of recurrence of fungal keratitis, highlighting the possible existence of an “unusual external route” that would occur by the fungus penetration through the full Bowman layer. Although these findings appear not […]

Acute rhinosinusitis is one of the most prevalent diseases of the upper airways. Anatomical factors present in children and young people allow for the onset of orbital complications. Although rare, intracranial complications of sinusitis account for a high degree of lethality, are more common in patients over the age of seven, and should be treated by a multidisciplinary team.

A female patient with juvenile glaucoma without clinical control underwent a trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, and developed eye hypotension which did not respond to conservative treatment, with subsequent hypotonic maculopathy. The patient was treated using a scleral patch provided by a donor above the fistula, which improved intraocular pressure and visual acuity. The use of the scleral patch above the fistula seems an adequate therapy to treat ocular hypotension due to the over-filtering trabeculectomy bubble. The surgeon should consider this […]

The authors present a case of choroidal osteoma diagnosed in a 25-year-old female patient. A well-defined and slightly elevated yellow lesion located in the posterior pole of the right eye was suspected to be a tumor. Confirmation of diagnosis was obtained with A and B ecography. The patient had low vision and macular edema, which improved after intraocular injection of bevacizumab .

Carotid-cavernous fistulas are a major cause of secondary glaucoma due to increased episcleral venous pressure. We present the case of a 72-year-old female patient, treated at the Hospital de Clínicas at the Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (HC-UFTM), with pain, proptosis, episcleral engorgement, chemosis and pulsation in the right eye, with increased intraocular pressure (IOP) on anti-glaucomatous medication.Arteriography showed dural fistula to the right cavernous sinus, with reflux to orbital veins.Treatment with liquid embolization agent was performed, following full recovery […]

This article presents a review of the principles and clinical applications of the Scheimpflug principle in the anterior segment imaging. By providing a three-dimensional image of the anterior segment, this technology provides elevation and curvature data of the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea, pachymetric mapping, the total refractive power of the cornea and the anterior segment biometry. For the refractive surgery sub-specialty, this approach improves the ability to identify cases at risk of ectasia, as well as the […]
