Introduction: Pterygium is a centripetal proliferation of fibrovascular tissue, which proceeds from the bulbar conjunctiva towards the center of the cornea. Excision of the pterygium may cause visual acuity improvement and surgical excision aims to achieve a topographically regular ocular surface. The improvement of the visual acuity results from the alteration of the refractive corneal power, that is measured in the topography as alteration of the topographic astigmatism. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation of the […]

Objective: This work had the objective of reviewing the literature on the evaluation and detection of intracranial hypertension through optical nerve ultrasound. Method: literature review based on a bibliographic survey in the electronic databases: PubMed, LILACS, SCIELO and CINAHL, using the following descriptors: Intracranial Hypertension.Optic Nerve. Ultrasonography, its correspondents in Portuguese and their intersections. We selected 27 articles published in the period of 1998-2017. Results: the articles indicated that ultrasonography of the diameter of the optic nerve sheath (ONSD) is […]

Purpose: To demonstrate the efficacy of 0.025% atropine eyedrops in myopic children in Brazil for decreasing myopia progression Methods: This was a prospective study with 60 children from Hospital Geral Universitário and Oftalmocenter Santa Rosa in Cuiabá, MT, Brazil, aged between 6 to 12 years, with spherical equivalent refractive error of -1.00 to -6.00 diopters (D) and astigmatism of -1.00 D or smaller. They underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, corneal topography and optical biometry. Children were assigned into two groups: […]

Objective: Acute anterior uveitis (AAU) is the most common extra-articular manifestation of spondyloarthritis. The aim of this study is to analyze if the presence of uveitis is associated with a diferent clinical manifestation, laboratorial, radiological and therapetiuc among spondyloarthritis patients. Methods: This was a observational retrospective study with 153 patients with spondyloarthritis attended in the period from 1997 to 2017 in Florianopolis, Brazil. It was analyzed demografical, laboratorial, clinical and therapeutic data in spondyloarthritis patients with or without uveitis. Results: […]

Female, 29, former smoker, diagnosed in September 2012 with Graves’ disease and rapid presentation of bilateral exophthalmos. In the ophthalmologic evaluation, it presented preserved motility, proptosis and upper fat sac in OA with retraction of PPSS and PPII and exophthalmetry in OD of 26 mm, and in OE of 24 mm. In May 2014, he performed the mapping of the retina that showed scars of chorioretinitis in both eyes and computerized campimetry, presenting a nasal step in OD, superior contraction, […]

Paralysis of the third cranial nerve represents the most complex and challenging paralytic squint. The cases of complete III nerve paralysis encourages the use of certain strabismus surgery techniques in order to keep eye in primary position of gaze. However, the therapeutic possibilities are limited and complex and the surgical treatment tends to hypocorrection and frequent recurrences in the long term. Complete and congenital involvement of the third cranial nerve requires surgeries for exotropia, hypotropia and ptosis. Among the surgical […]
