Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of the contact lens adaptation in relation to the improvement of visual acuity in patients with keratoconus. Methods: A retrospective study of 175 patients (326 eyes) with keratoconus was carried out from March 2004 to June 2015. Data on sex, age, number of adapted eyes, keratoconus severity, and visual acuity with glasses and contact lenses were collected. Results: Of the classified eyes, 267 (81.9%) had moderate keratoconus (45 to 52D). The most frequent age group […]

Objective: Cataract is the leading cause of reversible blindness in the world and its treatment is based on surgery, facectomy. The evolution of the procedure has been based on several pillars, but it is in the development of new types of intraocular lenses that has been showing considerable innovations. Current lenses are capable, in addition to treating cataracts, of correcting refractive errors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life and post-facectomy vision, comparing multifocal lenses […]

Objective: To describe the profile of childhood eye trauma in an ophthalmologic emergency unit. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study reviewing medical records of patients under 15 years of age at a referral hospital in the ophthalmologic emergency sector from April 2016 to March 2017. Information was collected from the patient and the history of the trauma, the type of trauma and details involved. Ophthalmologic exam was performed, visual acuity, lesions description and type of conduct were verified. Results: A total […]

The objective of this work is to evaluate the profile of intravitreal applications of Ranibizumab in a population of adults attended at the Benjamin Constant Institute in the year of 2015, taking into account the effect on visual acuity and macular thickness after the treatment. The secondary objective is to present the main indications of this type of treatment in the eye care mentioned above. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed in individuals over 20 years of age between March […]

Purpose: Study the prognostic factors for short-term visual improvement in pacients treated with ranibizumab (IVR) for diabetic macular edema (DME). Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study in which 41 eletronic medical records of patients who attended in a private medical clinic in Belo Horizonte – Minas Gerais in a period of August / 2016 to May / 2017. It was verified general data and previous history of patients who received consecutive monthly IVR for DME, analyzing sex, age and presence of previous […]

Corneal diseases account for about 4 to 5% of reversible blindness in the world. Corneal transplantation is the most transplanted tissue in the world and the only widely accepted treatment to promote corneal transparency and restore vision. Monitoring was incorporated into the field of Public Health, with the objective of systematically monitoring teams’ performance and production data, through the creation of norms, periodic evaluation inspections and monitoring of quality indicators. The critical analyzes of the results aim to point out […]

Pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMCD) is a rare bilateral noninflammatory ectatic peripheral corneal disorder, usually involving the inferior portion of the cornea, separated from limbus by an area of normal corneal thickness. There is protrusion of the cornea above the thinning area, resulting in high irregular astigmatism. Corneal Topography shows the characteristic, but not pathognomonic, image of a “butterfly wing”. A patient with superior PMCD – an atypical presentation of the disease – is presented, highlighting the importance of the […]

Blunt eye trauma can generate a wide range of intraocular lesions that are dependent on the amount of energy the object transfers to the eye during the impact. Lesions of the iris, trabecular meshwork and ciliary body may influence aqueous humor drainage. The cyclodialysis which is characterized by the detachment of ciliary body from the scleral wall, creating a communication between the anterior chamber to supracoroid space, can cause a several reduction of intraocular pressure. This pressure decrease is responsible […]
