ABSTRACT

Objective:

To describe the epidemiological characteristics of corneal transplants in Brazil between 2014 and 2023.

Methods:

This is a descriptive, retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from the SIA/SUS platform of DATASUS, covering the period from 2014 to 2023. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted using the SPSS software. The variables studied included the number of transplants, regional disparities, and the relationship between public funding and procedures performed.

Results:

During the analyzed period, 38,728 corneal transplants were performed in Brazil, with a peak in 2017 (5,097 procedures) and a 47% decline in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovery began in 2021, but the numbers remained below pre-pandemic levels. The Southeast region had the highest number of transplants, while the North region had the lowest number. The average cost per transplant was R$ 2.167,05.

Conclusion:

The study showed a growing demand for corneal transplants, although the pandemic negatively impacted the numbers. Regional disparities were identified, highlighting the need for greater investment in regions with less access, particularly in the North region.
