ABSTRACT

Objective:

To analyze the ophthalmologic emergency care provided at a public hospital in Northern Minas Gerais.

Methods:

This is an analytical cross-sectional study. The data were obtained from medical records regarding ophthalmologic emergency care provided in 2022 at a public hospital in Northern Minas Gerais.

Results:

A total of 314 ophthalmologic consultations were evaluated, with traumatic injuries being the most frequent, accounting for 58.6% of cases. Foreign bodies were the most common cause of traumatic injury, and iron filings were the most recurrent cause, with 61.4% (n=70; p<0.001). It was observed that 70.65% (n=65; p<0.001) were not using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Conclusion:

The data suggest that more effective oversight is needed in work environments that require the use of goggles for eye protection.
