PURPOSE: To investigate whether there is a difference in topographic characteristics of optic nerve head analyzed by Heidelberg retina tomography (HRTII) in relatives of normal patients with or without history of open angle glaucoma. METHODS: Retrospective study analyzing the optic disc morphometry of normal patients with or without family history of glaucoma. Each participant underwent a routine examination, visual field testing, pachimetry and optic nerve head topography.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of keratoconjuntivitis sicca and secondary Sjögren syndrome (SS) in patients with RA from Southern Brazil and to analyze their relationship with RA duration, activity and patient’s functional class. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may have keratoconjuntivitis sicca that can be considered an extra articular manifestation of this disease. METHODS: We studied 82 RA patients for sicca symptoms, Schirmer test, DAS-28 (RA activity index) and functional class. RESULTS: There were eye sicca symptoms in 57.3%, positive […]

To describe a new method for iris fixation of intraocular lens in the absence of capsular support during penetrating keratoplasty. Its a new technique of iris fixation of intraocular lens without capsular support during penetrating keratoplasty. This technique is used in cases with a healthy iris and partial or total absence of capsular support during penetrating keratoplasty. Tied Out Open Sky is a technique easy to perform for iris fixation of intraocular lens during penetrating keratoplasty. The big advantage is […]

The authors report one case of nevus of Reed, which has histological aspect of malignancy, but a benign evolution. A 48-years-old brown skin male presented nasal pterygium in right eye, associated with a small and poorly pigmented lesion located on the pterygium head. Both were excised without complications and, currently, there is no recidivation. The histopathological examination revealed one lesion with defined edges, limited to the epithelium, consisted of spindle cells perpendiculars to the surface and with sparse melanin pigmentation. Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe, irreversible vision loss in individuals over 50 years in developed countries. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been shown to play a role in the regulation of choroidal neovascularization and vascular permeability. Anti-VEGF drugs have been shown to preserve or improve visual acuity by inhibiting vascular permeability and arresting the growth of neovascularization in the vast majority of treated patients. This review describes the current literature on the use of […]
