OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the visual response of children with developmental dyslexia when ambiguous figure was presented in comparison with normal readers children. METHODS: 39 children from basic school was randomly chosen. 26 were normal readers. 13 were diagnosed developmental dyslexia. Were presented the Boring figure, Rubin vessels figure and Jastrow figure. RESULTS: Participants in the clinical group with dyslexia performed marginally less well than those in the control group. CONCLUSION: The visual response of children with developmental dyslexia when ambiguous figure was […]

PURPOSE: There are several methods to measure the Interpupilary Distance (IPD), but the method used in most office is the milimetric ruler. Currently, the autorrefractor is used routinely to find for the subjective evaluation of the refractive error, but the IPD from the autorrefractor is often not compared with the traditional method of measurement. The objective of the study is to achieve the measures of IPD between the two methods and compare the results with each other. METHODS: One hundred and […]

PURPOSE: This is to study the progressive addition lens (PAL) under the physiological optics’ view, to show the lensometer findings and its applicability to daily work. METHODS: At first, the aa., explains the ways to examine the PAL , and then indicates the physical basis applied to study the prismatic system of the concave and convex lens. It then examines the differences on progression zone extension and explains its diagonal position. Thirteen pairs of lenses from the same manufacturer were […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome and safety of the transition from phacoemulsification performed by third year residents using peribulbar anesthesia to topical anesthesia. METHODS: Cases performed by third year residents from august 2004 to february 2005 were analyzed. Patients were operated under peribulbar (group I) and topical anesthesia (group II). Variables analyzed included patients age, sex, visual acuity under pinhole and complications. Patients with low visual acuity other than cataract were excluded from analysis. RESULTS: A total of 151 eyes […]

Report of four cases of presumed ocular tuberculosis, with involvement of the posterior segment in tree cases. In the first and second case, report anterior involvement of the eye and antecedent of tuberculosis, in a systemic case and the other ocular. In the third case, patient presents coriorretiniana lesion in the left eye. In the fourth case, report lesion serpiginosa-like.The patients under-went the treatment for tuberculosis. The ocular lesions of the tuberculosis are polymorphic and we must be aware of […]

Purtscher-like retinopathy is acute loss of vision associated image of the multiple areas of retinal whitening and hemorrhage in the posterior pole of both eyes. The exact mechanism of injury remains unclear, current evidence suggests that it is embolic in nature. In a variety of conditions are been described including acute pancreatitis, fat embolism syndrome, renal failure, childbirth, and connective tissue disorders. Will are related three cases of the acute pancreatitis which was confirmed by complementary laboratory studies and clinical […]

Vitreoretinal interface: current concepts

DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802008000200009

Assessment of the vitreoretinal interface has been greatly aided by the development of optical coherence tomography, in 1995. This imaging technology has allowed us to study involutional and disease processes that were previously unrecognizable by biomicroscopy and ultrasonography alone. This article will review these studies and illustrate the usefulness of optical coherence tomography in the evaluation of the vitreoretinal interface.
