PURPOSE: To study the clinical performance of progressive addition lens (PAL) Gradal Top®, Carl Zeiss Vision compared with other PAL lenses previously worn by presbyopic ametropes. METHODS: Forty presbyopes satisfied with their PAL spectacles (addition <2.00D) were included in the study. Following a complete ophthalmologic examination all presbyopes received new prescription glasses fitted with Gradal Top® PAL supplied by Carl Zeiss Vision Brasil at no cost. Evaluation occurred during an interview and the results were recorded in three different forms. […]

PURPOSE: To describe our experience with crosslinking after Ferrara ring implant for better vision and corneal stabilization. METHODS: six patients with age of 26 – 38 years old had treatment with crosslinking after Ferrara ring implant. Five patients had 2 ring segments implanted and one patient had one segment implanted. After 4 to 55 months the patients were submitted to crosslinking with UVA light according to Seiler et al protocol. RESULTS: Four eyes had progressive alteration of refraction and 2 […]

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical, histopathological and immunoistochemical findings of ocular leishmaniasis in five patients presenting positive Montenegro reaction. METHODS: Retrospective study in four years of the clinical charts, histopathologic and immunoistochemic study of the material obtained by biopsy of ocular lesions in five patients with positive Montenegro reaction. RESULTS: The most frequent clinical findings was conjunctival hyperemia (2/5), followed by crusting lid lesion (1/5), conjunctival leukoplakia (1/5) and ocular itching (1/5). The histopathological study disclosed chronic inflammation (3/5) and […]

Chloroquine phosphate is widely used for the treatment of chronic autoimune diseases, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis, discoid or disseminated lupus erythematous, light sensitivity eruptions as well as other dermatologic affections. Although the incidence of retinal toxicity by this drug is low even with the maximally recomended dose, its occurrence is relevant because it damages the macula with an important and irreversible visual impairment. A 44-year-old white female patient who had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for about 19 years had been […]

We describe a 56-year-old female patient that presented with headache, unilateral optic disc edema and nasal visual field constriction. Laboratory and imaging investigation, clinical findings and response to treatment lead to the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hyperthension. We emphasize that unilateral papiledema can be an unusual clinical presentation of the syndrome and discuss its differential diagnosis and treatment.

With aspherical intraocular lens (IOL), phakectomy could be more than removal of cataract, it also could means an improvement in optical quality of the eye. In this article, recently published studies on aspherical IOLs and exams to access optical quality were reviewed.
