About a year ago, Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia (RBO) started publishing most of its editions in the Ahead of Print form, in which the jornal is available electronically on the website of Sociedade Brasileira de Oftalmologia (SBO) before the distribution of the printed version. The disclosure is made approximately one month before the normal deadline. In this advanced publication profile we have increased agility and editorial dynamism, enabling early access to the latest research and the possibility of citation of […]

Trachoma has been mistakenly assumed as having been eradicated, but is on the list of neglected diseases. It is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the world, being found predominantly in developing countries. Several studies have shown that this disease is currently present in all regions of Brazil, which shows that both the government (at the federal, state and municipal levels) and academia must continue to treat trachoma as one of the causes of blindness. In this study, we […]

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of a software program package at Brazilian public eye care institutions through an online survey. The package is made up of the institutions’ websites, electronic medical records, regulatory assistance control system and the preoperative scheduling system. The aim is to analyze if this type of software facilitates the provisioning of eye care services, the patients’ surgical procedure agenda, and access to information about the patients. Methods: Public health care institutions with eye care services were […]

Objective: To study, by means of histopathological examination, the epidemiology of fungal keratitis treated with penetrating keratoplasty therapy, emphasizing the presence of previous ocular surgery. Methods: Initially, we made an observational and cross-sectional study of corneal buttons from penetrating keratoplasty in the 2006-2015 period sent for histopathological examination at the Hospital Geral de Fortaleza Eye Bank.Tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, PAS or Grocott, and examined with an optical microscope. We selected the cases with histopathological diagnosis of fungal keratitis. After […]

Purpose: To observe the frequency of occurrence of affections involving the adnexa or the external eye, as well as to describe the demographic profile of patients. Methods: A prospective, population based, randomized study was done in the Midwest region of the state of São Paulo, in the years 2004/2005. Using a Mobile Ophthalmic Unit we evaluated 11,000 people. A comprehensive eye exam was performed. Data were transferred to excel table and for this study we used information relating to annexes […]

Purpose: to evaluate the use of air tonometer (TA) in population studies in individuals suspected of ocular hypertension, comparing values with those provided by the Goldmann Tonometer (GT). Methods: a cross-sectional study was done using a probabilistic sample consisting of 11,452 individuals e”20 years old.A subsample composed by the individuals with IOP values obtained with TA e”20 mmHg was selected, in which IOP was repeated with the GT. The results of both tonometers were compared considering gender, referred color of […]

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of Nanoskin for replacing volume in enucleated or eviscerated anophthalmic sockets of rabbits. Methods: An experimental study was carried out using enucleated or eviscerated rabbits, which received Nanoskin implants (Innovatecs®, São Carlos, Brazil), a cellulose produced by a bacteria (Acetobacter xylinum) using green tea as substrate. Implants of 10mm diameter/5mm of thickness were used placed in enucleated (G1) or eviscerated (G2) anophthalmic sockets of 21 rabbits. They were clinically examined […]

Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of a mutation in candidate genetic loci and its relation with keratoconus in patients treated in Brazil compared to healthy volunteers, through analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism in the DOCK9 gene. Methods: In this clinical study, 108 participants were evaluated, including 46 keratoconus patients and 62 healthy volunteers (controls). DNA samples were extracted from collected blood from keratoconus patients and controls. The genotyping of the single nucleotide polymorphism rs7995432 in the DOCK9 gene was determined […]

The authors report a case of a 69 year-old woman who developed persistent vertical deviation and diplopia after extracapsular cataract surgery and had a positive past history of thyroid disease. The authors emphasize the need of for detailed orbit propedeutics in order to rule out restrictive strabismus associated with post-facectomy diplopia.
