PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of occlusion of the lacrimal punctum reversible with the use of thermosensitive plugs to treat the dysfunctional tear syndrome. METHODS: Eighteen eyes of 9 patients with dry eye were selected and subjected to reversible occlusion of the lacrimal punctum with the use of thermosensitive plugs and were followed for 60 days through the OSDI questionnaire, fluorescein staining, rose bengal staining and Schirmer’s test. RESULTS: in all studied patients there was improvement in dry eye symptoms […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate central corneal thickness (CCT) in phakic children (controls) and in those with cataracts, pseudophakia and aphakia. Study prospective, observational METHODS: Central corneal thickness was measured in 94 eyes of 47 children. Subjects with Down Syndrome, aniridia, Marfan Syndrome, glaucoma, anterior segment abnormalities or intraocular pressure over 30 mmHg were excluded. Groups were compared for controls and for eyes with pediatric cataracts, pseudophakia and aphakia. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients were male and eighteen female and the mean age was […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near vision after aspheric multifocal diffractive AcrySof® ReSTOR® SN6AD1 intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: Prospective study of 50 patients with cataract that had phacoemulsification and AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL implantation. Uncorrected distance vision acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) were measured postoperatively. A patient-satisfaction and visual phenomena questionnaire was administered at the end of the study. RESULTS: Three months postoperatively, the mean acuities […]

PURPOSE:To assess the 5-year cost, effectiveness and costeffectiveness of fixed combinations of prostaglandin or prostamide and timolol 0. 5% on glaucoma and/or ocular hypertension in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the following fixed combinations: bimatoprost/timolol 0. 5% (BT), latanoprost/timolol 0. 5% (LT) and travoprost/ timolol 0. 5% (TT). Cost was obtained through mean number of drops in a sample of 5 containers of each medication, duration (days) and the average wholesale price (AWP). Effectiveness […]

PURPOSE: the aim of the present study is to compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) and visual acuity (VA) after combined surgery: phacoemulsification with non penetrating deep sclerectomy and phacoemulsification with trabeculectomy. METHODS: this is an observacional and retrospective study by chart review. We selected 148 eyes from 127 patients from Tadeu Cvintal Ophthalmolgy Institute during January 1998 thru January 2007. All patients had primary angle glaucoma and cataract. Seventy seven patients were female, 49 (59%) had phacoemulsification with non penetrating […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the characteristics and evolution of the retinal detachment developed after successful treatment of retinoblastoma. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 220 consecutive patients treated for retinoblastoma from january 1978 to december 2008 disclosed two patients who developed retinal detachment during the follow-up. RESULTS: Retinal detachment was found in two patients several months after the treatment of retinoblastoma. Both were managed by surgery with restoration of their monocular vision. CONCLUSION: Surgical management of retinal detachment is indicated to preserve […]

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of 25-gauge transconjuntival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) in patients with persistent vitreous floaters who underwent multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: Fourteen eyes of 11 patients with multifocal IOL implant associated with vitreous opacities that underwent 25-gauge vitrectomy were prospectively analyzed. Information collected included near (UCNVA) and distance uncorrected visual acuity (UCDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), and the spherical equivalent (SE) before and 3 months after vitrectomy. Patients […]

Posner-Scholssman Syndrom is characterized by intermittent acute episodes of glaucoma with mild anterior uveitis. Usually, the crisis is unilateral, recurrent and typified by discreet dilation of the pupils as opposed to constricted pupils, commonly seen in iritis. Herein this article, we report three cases of male patients with Posner-Schlossman syndrome, two of them showing a significant degree of first degree parenthood. Based upon typical signs and symptoms, and careful eye examination, thereby discussed and analyzed, it is possible to diagnose […]
