No […]

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess if early alterations detected by Pentacam in children suffering from mild ocular allergy are suggestive of ectasia. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 49 medical records of patients of both sexes, aged between 3 and 14 years was performed. In this sample, 31 children suffered from grade I ocular allergy, and 18 presented no signs or symptoms of ocular allergy and comprised the control group. Several Pentacam indexes were evaluated. Results: A statistically significant association was found […]

ABSTRACT Objective To assess the economic impact of reducing glaucoma progression by using the trabecular micro-bypass implant, iStent inject®, in the Reference Centers for glaucoma treatment within the Brazilian Public Unified Health System (SUS). Methods In a cost-effectiveness analysis, a Markov model was developed, and the costs were obtained from the SUS perspective (medical direct costs). Effectiveness was measured in progression-free life-years. The time horizon was the mean life expectancy of the Brazilian population. The model parameters were obtained through […]

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe ocular surface findings in impression cytology obtained from healthy rabbit conjunctiva treated with interferon alpha-2b eyedrop, and compare them to findings after use of mitomycin C 0.02%. Methods: An experimental study using a rabbit model was performed between September 2013 and October 2014 at the Faculdade de Medicina de Marília, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Clínica de Olhos Moacir Cunha. Thirty New Zealand white rabbits were divided into 6 groups and received interferon alpha-2b or mitomycin […]

ABSTRACT The authors present a case of lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei , a rare skin disease of unknown etiology, which may cause unaesthetic scarring due to its difficult treatment. The histopathological examination of epithelioid granulomas with caseating necrosis, together with the clinical features, are important for diagnosis and early treatment with better results. Despite difficult and unsatisfactory treatment, there are ongoing studies on therapy to improve aesthetic and social impairment. This case report describes an initial misdiagnosis delaying appropriate treatment, […]

ABSTRACT Choroidal tuberculomas are present in patients with ocular tuberculosis. They usually occur in a patient with previous history of tuberculosis, and are rarely the initial presentation, with no prior systemic manifestations. We present a patient with unilateral choroidal tuberculoma as the initial presentation of presumed ocular tuberculosis, which enabled earlier initiation of treatment.

ABSTRACT Amyloidosis is characterized by extracellular deposition of protein amyloid fibrils in tissues, including conjunctiva, which are insoluble in proteolytic proteins. Conjunctival amyloidosis specifically in the palpebral conjunctiva is a rare finding in clinical practice. The authors described the case of a 71-year-old caucasian male patient, with bilateral lesions located in the lower eyelid conjunctiva, elevated, well-defined, yellowish, combined with destabilized eyelids. Surgical excision of the lesions was performed, and the histological examination confirmed conjunctival amyloidosis. There was no recurrence […]

ABSTRACT Lasik is the most often performed laser refractive surgery worldwide. Despite its efficacy and safety, some complications may occur. Epithelial ingrowth is a rare postoperative complication of Lasik, with an increased prevalence in cases of retreatment. Epithelial ingrowth is usually a nonprogressive and asymptomatic finding, which requires no treatment; however, in a minority of cases, symptoms may be clinically significant and diverse. Treatment is done with mechanical debridement of the affected interface, and additional interventions may be required. This […]

ABSTRACT Although coloboma of optic nerve head and/or chorioretinal tissue is not uncommon, duplication or pseudoduplication of the optic disc is rare. Here we report a rare case of pseudotripling of optic disc in a 50-year-old asymptomatic male patient. Orbital magnetic resonance image confirmed presence of only one optic nerve.

ABSTRACT Retinoblastomas are the most common primary intraocular malignancy of childhood, with a high incidence in the first 2 years of life. This is the report of the first unilateral retinoblastoma case in a 57-year-old Colombian female, who presented to consultation with an advanced neovascular glaucoma in the left eye. Examination revealed an amelanotic intraocular mass that required enucleation. The histopathology report and specific tumor markers of the enucleated specimen revealed the diagnosis. A 10-year follow-up was carried out with […]

ABSTRACT This paper aimed to report a case of tarsal buckling associated with conjunctival prolapse and upper eyelid inversion as a complication of surgical correction of residual ptosis. A 15-year-old female patient with unilateral residual eyelid ptosis in the right eye, secondary to partial correction of congenital blepharoptosis operated in childhood. The second surgery was performed with resection of the upper eyelid levator muscle aponeurosis, which progressed to conjunctival inversion of the upper eyelid. The structural fragility of the tarsus […]

ABSTRACT Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Ocular involvement can occur at any time, and it may affect 10% of patients in the secondary stage, and from 2% to 5% in the tertiary stage. Uveitis is the most common presentation of ocular syphilis, affecting 0.4% to 8% of patients with systemic disease. Chorioretinitis is the most common posterior alteration. We present the case of a 53-year-old male patient, presenting with bilateral low visual acuity […]

ABSTRACT A 10-year-old Malay girl with underlying HbE/beta-thalassemia, on regular blood transfusion and deferoxamine iron chelation therapy, presented with two-month history of bilateral blurring of vision. On examination, her vision was 6/36 both eyes. Other optic nerve functions were normal. Anterior segment examination of both eyes was unremarkable. Fundus examination of both eyes revealed dull foveal reflex. Optical coherence tomography of both maculae showed increased central subfield thickness. Fundus fluorescence angiography showed patchy hypofluorescence over macular region for both eyes […]

ABSTRACT Description of a patient with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy submitted to a corneal transplant, performed by Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty, which evolved with sudden, paroxysmal pain in the frontotemporal region, postoperatively. Due to the ophthalmologic picture of the patient, the attending physician believed in possible rejection of the graft, neglecting the complaint of pain. Even after a successful second transplant, performed due to primary failure, disabling pain persisted and the physician did not manage it. After years of investigation, consulting […]

ABSTRACT The work of air traffic control specialists require several hours looking at screens, and they comprise a group particularly exposed to digital-related eye strain. In this review we aim to understand the quantitative and qualitative methods currently used to diagnose and evaluate asthenopia in air traffic control specialists. A bibliographic search was carried out at the databases PubMed® and ClinicalKey®, using keywords, and selecting review articles and observational studies, dated after 2000, containing the keywords in the title and/o […]

ABSTRACT We present the case of a patient with an optic disk pit, presenting with great loss of visual acuity secondary to serous retinal detachment. The management chosen was an intravitreal injection of 0.3 mL of C3F8 (100%), followed by argon laser photocoagulation on the temporal edge of the pit, ), achieving total retinal reattachment , and reabsorption of all subretinal fluid visible at optical coherence tomography after 400 days, in addition to great improvement in visual acuity.
