PURPOSE: To evaluate the alterations that occur on the cornea sensitivity after Lasik and PRK surgery. METHODS: Prospective studies have evaluated60 eyes from 30 patients subjected simultaneously to bilateral Lasik and 30 eyes from 15 patients subjected simultaneously to bilateral PRK. According to the amount of inner operatory ablation the eyes were divided into two groups: Group I (< 40 µm) and group II (> 40µm). The cornea sensitivity was measured in the central region of the cornea on the […]

PURPOSE: evaluate the results of a case series of iris-sutured posterior chamber IOLs for the correction of aphakia in the cataract sector of the department of Ophthalmology of the ABC School of Medicine and compare them with the existing data. METHODS: prospective study of eight patients who underwent foldable IOL implantation using modified McCannel iris suture fixation for aphakia in the absence of capsule support. RESULTS: seven of eight patients (87,5%) without surgical complications improved their best corrected visual acuity. […]

The ultrasound is an important method in the evaluation of abnormalities of the posterior segment of the eye. PURPOSE: To compare the advantages and disadvantages of 10 and 20 MHz probe on B- scanning ultra-sonography in evaluation of vitreous and posterior pole diseases, providing recommendations for their use. METHODS: Patients from Hospital das Clinicas of the University of São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), attended between February 2006 and April 2007, were submitted to ultrasound exams using CINE-Scan® (Quantel Medical Inc) B-scan with […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin A and crotoxin on satellite cell activation in the muscle fibers of superior rectus muscles of rabbits. METHODS: The superior rectus muscles in the right eyes of 29 male, albino, New Zealand rabbits were inoculated with different doses of botulinum toxin A or crotoxin. The contra-lateral superior rectus muscles in each rabbit were inoculated with the same volume of saline solution only. The animals were sacrificed either 12, 18 or 25 days […]

Herpes Zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) is caused by a varicella-zoster virus infection which remains latent in the ganglion of Gasser until it is reactivated and compromise the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. HZO commonly causes neuro-ophthalmic complications such as vesicular lesions in the eyelids, keratoconjunctivitis, sclertis, uveitis, ocular palsy, orbital miositis and optic neuritis. HZO rarely presents as an orbital apex syndrome. This paper describes a patient with of orbital apex syndrome associate and meningitis caused by HZO which was […]

Optical coherence tomography was progressively incorporated to the contemporary diagnostic arsenal in Ophthalmology, playing a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of eye diseases, particularly in the specialty of retina and vitreous. The commercial availability of the new generation of devices, coined “spectral” optical coherence tomography, which is based in a distinct physical concept that permits high-speed image acquisition, launched a new era for this investigative ancillary tool. In addition, the recent combination of this new technology with a […]
