PURPOSE: To quantify the potential cornea donor from the different units of Clinical Hospital of the UFPR. METHODS: 369 records of patients who died from april until july of 2005 in the HC-UFPR were analyzed. The medical records of each patient had been evaluated: the clinical evolution, CID-10 and hospital unit of the death. To be considered potential donor (PD) it was used as exclusion criteria the topics cited in the Manual of Transplants (2ª edition-2004) of the State Secretariat […]

OBJECTIVE: To verify if the total ocular aberrometry (wavefront analysis) facilitates manifest refraction and improvement in best spectacle distance corrected visual acuity (BSCDVA) with sphero-cylindrical lenses, in keratoconus cases with some degree of contact lenses intolerance. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 46 patients (89 eyes) referred with keratoconus and contact lenses intolerance was performed. Ocular aberrometry with ray tracing was followed by manifest refraction. BSCDVA (logMAR) with the previous correction was compared with the one obtained based on the wavefront […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the complication’s rate of cataract surgery performed by ophthalmology residents (second and third-year) and experienced surgeons at a public teaching hospital. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients who had cataract surgery between March (begin of the technique practice) and November (end of the technique practice) was conducted. RESULTS: In 481 cataracts surgeries, 194 (40%) was performed by third-year residents, 165 (34%) by second-year residents and 116 (26%) by experienced surgeons. The most frequent complication in […]

PURPOSE: To assess intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year in normal eyes submitted to a phacoemulsification. METHODS: Intraocular pressure retrospective analyses (measured by Goldmann applanation tonometer) of 221 normal eyes of 133 patients submitted to an uneventful phacoemulsification. The IOP was evaluated before and after phacoemulsification ( 1day, 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year), and these values were […]

Parinaud’s oculoglandular syndrome is a rare eye disease caused by different pathogens, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is characterized by a granulomatous conjunctivitis with adjacent preauricular lympha-denopathy and can cause sequelae if not promptly treated. We report a case of a young nurse assistant and veterinary student showing Parinaud’s oculoglandular syndrome caused by the fungus Sporothrix schenkii after contamination with infected cats. Its clinical presentation and negative outcome until the correct ethiological diagnosis, in addition to specific treatment, emphasize […]

Two cases of mycosis fungoides associated with HTLV-I are reported. The ophthalmological findings were, in the first case, punctate keratopathy and keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and in the second case, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, thickening and difuse nodulos on eyelid margin. The association of mycosis fungoides and HTLV-I in these cases suggests involvement of this agent in the pathogenesis of the disease.

A 82 years old women reported an external opthalmomyiasis. She was a diabetic and with high blood pressure carrier, living in rural area. Initially a she had pain with swelling, erythema and nodulation located on the upper eyelid and normal eye and a pre-septal cellulitis was suspected and antibiotic and local steroid were introduced, which led to a reduction of inflammatory process and to perform an appropriate physical examination with the eversion of the upper eyelid, which established the diagnosis […]

A brief historical review of gonioscopy since the pioneering works published by Trantas and Salzmann is presented. The techniques of examination are described and the advantages and disadvantages of each one are discussed. Based on the classifications in the literature, a new one is proposed: the APIC classification. In this classification each one of the elements of the anterior chamber angle are graduated: A = anterior chamber angle Amplitude; P = Pigmentation; I = iris Implantation; and C = iris […]
