ABSTRACT

Objective:

To investigate the epidemiological profile of ocular toxoplasmosis in an ophthalmology hospital in western Paraná.

Methods:

A retrospective study conducted between 2015 and 2022 through the review of medical records, using the presence of chorioretinal scars as a presumptive diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis.

Results:

3.03% of patients seen during the study period presented with presumptive ocular toxoplasmosis lesions, with a higher prevalence in women (57.25%) and in the age group of 60–79 years old (42.18%). Diabetes was observed in 35.77% of cases, and 38.12% of the patients were retired. The analysis indicated a higher risk for ocular toxoplasmosis in individuals over 60 years old (OR = 4.68; p < 0.001).

Conclusion:

The epidemiological profile of patients found in this study is consistent with other research in Brazilian regions. Increased surveillance and health promotion and prevention actions are recommended to reduce the prevalence and visual complications of toxoplasmosis.
