Development and validation of a prototype for corneal foreign body extraction

ABSTRACT

Objective:

To develop and validate a prototype of magnifying glasses to improve precision and safety in the extraction of corneal foreign bodies.

Methods:

The prototype was made on a 3D printer using ABS material, containing a 30x magnifying glass and LED lighting. Validation was carried out by 22 specialist ophthalmologists using the Delphi method, who evaluated the device’s functionality, usability, aesthetics, safety, and durability. Statistical analysis included the Content Validity Index (CVI) and McDonald’s Omega coefficient.

Results:

The experts gave the prototype an overall positive evaluation, with durability (CVI = 0.976) and safety (CVI = 0.730) standing out. However, the usability index was lower (CVI = 0.500), indicating the need for refinements in the design to make it easier to handle and learn to use.

Conclusion:

The prototype developed has promising potential for clinical application, providing a technological alternative to the extraction of corneal foreign bodies. Adjustments in usability and training of professionals can optimize its effectiveness, making it an innovative tool in ophthalmic practice.
