DOI: 10.37039/1982.8551.20260033
ABSTRACT
Objective:
To analyze the epidemiological and economic aspects of hospital admissions for glaucoma in Brazil between 2018-2024.
Methods:
Analytical ecological time-series study using SIH (Hospital System Information)/SUS data from the DATASUS platform. All hospital admissions with a diagnosis of glaucoma during the period were included.
Results:
A total of 50,062 admissions were recorded, reflecting a 45.9% increase. Most cases occurred in brown-skinned males aged 60-69. Most surgeries were elective. The Southeast region had the highest number of cases, while the North showed the greatest growth. Hospital costs rose from R$ 3.3 to R$ 7.5 million.
Conclusion:
Glaucoma imposes an increasing burden on Brazil’s public health system, with notable regional disparities. The findings highlight the need for public policies focused on prevention, early diagnosis, and expanded access to specialized ophthalmic care.
