Purpose: To continue the updating and improving process of the cataract surgery in Brazil, through recently pulled out and documented registries. In addition, we want to obtain data for a comparative analysis of the current national and international surgical trends. METHODS:In May 2007, data were obtained from 188 participants of a Congress of Cataract and Refrative Surgery who answered simple and multiple-response questions about cataract surgery. Data were analyzed by statistic means of Chi-square test and T test. RESULTS:95.8% of […]

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of some forms of lenticular opacification in the Amsler grid test among patients suffering from senile cataract. METHODS: Randomized, prospective interventional trial. Two hundred patients with senile cataract were evaluated with Amsler grid, measurement of best corrected visual acuity for near distance and far distance, biomicroscopy of the anterior segment and macular region. RESULTS: With a two months minimum of follow-up, the average visual acuity after surgery for far distance among the 200 patients was […]

PURPOSE: This study aims to analyze prevalence and risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among preterms with birth weight (BW) d”1,500 grams and/or gestational age (GA) d”32 weeks, admitted in an University level 3 institution. METHODS: An institutional, prospective and descriptive cohort study including all preterms with BW d”1,500 grams and/or GA d”32 weeks, who survived from birth to the 42nd week of postmentrual age, was carried out from October 2002 to July 2008. The prevalence of any stage […]

POURPOSE: To demonstrate an improvement in paralytic lagophthalmos surgical treatment complications and aesthetic results by covering the gold weight implants with the levator palpebrae muscle aponeurosis. METHODS:We studied a case series of twenty nine patients presenting idiopatic facial palsy with more than 4 years of clinical evolution, submitted to paralytic lagophthalmos surgical treatment using a modification of the technique of gold weight implantation covered by the aponeurosis of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (Gladstone, 1996) between June 1997 and December […]

The article presents a histologic study of a rare recurrent iris melanoma seven months after iridocyclectomy, in a 45-year-old female patient. After enucleation, the histopathological examination of the ocular globe demonstrated the persistence of a small tumor fragment in iridectomy stump, developing the neoplasia recurrence. The case brings data for a discussion about the conservative surgery of ocular melanomas and an analytical position of Evidence Based Medicine. A rare case, with documentation only histopathologic, motivates the use of this finding […]

We report a 41-years-old woman with idiopathic intracranial hyperthension (psedotumor cerebri syndrome) that presented with visual loss in one eye due to subretinal neovascular membrane involving the macular area. Despite the introduction of adequate medical treatment followed by optic nerve sheath fenestration that lead to optic disc edema regression there was no improvement in the subretinal neovascular membrane even after performing three sequential intravitreal injection of bevacizumab. We stress the importance of recognizing this uncommon complication of papilledema and review […]

The primary congenital entropion of the superior eyelid is more infrequent than the one of the inferior eyelid. The premature diagnosis of this deformity in newborns, although difficult, is very necessary because implies an immediate surgical correction as it is a condition that does not recover spontaneously even leading to corneal ulceration with disastrous consequences for the vision. Many surgical techniques have been described to correct this malformation. The analysis and confrontation of the pre, per and postoperative data of […]

Diabetic macular edema must be assessed as early as possible, to avoid significant vision loss. To achieve this goal, there are many specific diagnostic tests that can be performed. The authors review the most common methods in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy.
