Purpose: To determine the effect on human aqueous humor cultures of topical gatifloxacin 0.3% applied four times a day three days before phacoemulsification compared to topical gatifloxaxin 0.3% applied and same-day surgery. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with cataract without other ocular diseases were randomly assigned to Groups A and B before phacoemulsification. Group A received topical gatifloxacin 0.3% same-day surgery and Group B received gatifloxacin 0.3% four times a day three days before phacoemulsification. After the procedure the aqueous humor was […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the IOPg (gold standard, Goldmann correlated Intraocular pressure) and IOPcc (corneal compensated Intraocular pressure) in patients prior to and following phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation METHODS: This is a prospective study. Thirty six consecutive patients (47 eyes) that underwent phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation were enrolled. Full ophthalmologic clinical assessment including Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA, Reichert Ophthalmic Instruments, Buffalo, NY, USA) measurements were performed in all cases prior to surgery (Pre) and at follow-up time points: […]

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to evaluate by means of the OCT Stratus the relation of the macular thickness with the thickness of nervous fiber layers. METHODS: In this work 106 eyes of the service of ophthalmology of the College of Medicine of the ABC had been analyzed. The study included 55 eyes that inside presented values of CFNR or above of the normal values in all the four quadrants and 51 eyes presenting values in only one […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the Piaui Federal University graduating medical students’ knowledge in basic ophthalmology, in order to promote curricular changes in this course. METHODS: Students that had already passed the ophthalmology course were asked to answer a standard questionnaire containing 10 multiple choice questions about some ophthalmology topics considered important in the general Doctor’s graduation, such as blinding prevention and ophthalmic emergencies. The students were also asked if they would feel secure and comfortable if they had to manage an […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the importance of Goldmann manual kinetic perimetry (MKP) in glaucomatous patients with advanced visual field loss in automated static perimetry (ASP) with Humphrey perimeter (HP). METHODS: The MKP with Goldmann perimeter (GP) was performed in patients with advanced primary open angle glaucoma with advanced visual field defect in the ASP with HP. A qualitative analysis was realized on the visual field extension in the Goldmann perimetry of these patients. RESULTS: The results are illustrated in a qualitative […]

The adult lacrimal obstruction can be congenital or acquired. In the case of the acquired form, the etiology classifies in not-specific (it involves the coating epithelium and/or the vascular plexus submucosae of the lacrimal duct) and specific (infections, inflammations, tumours and iatrogenies). The diagnosis is established by means of the anamnesis and clinical evaluation based on semiology of the lacrimal sack. The patients with lacrimal obstruction present epiphora, acute pains and swelling, mostly in the region of the lacrimal sack […]

The acute retinal necrosis is a rare and devastating necrotizing retinitis, which can be caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. It typically affects healthy patients of all ages. This study report a case of 18 year-old healthy male patient, with the the diagnosis of the acute retinal necrosis due to herpes simplex, and presents its clinical and ultrassonographic features. The acute retinal necrosis results in endofthalmitis because of lack of early diagnosis and therapy.

Rosai-Dorfman disease or sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy is a rare idiopathic and benign clinical entity, characterized by histiocytic proliferation with linfofagocitosis. It usually presents with cervical lymphadenopathy although extranodal involvement may occur. The orbital region is one of the most common extranodal sites. It is usually a self-limiting disease with spontaneous resolution but surgical excision, corticosteroids and radiotherapy may be necessary. We describe the case of a 29-years-old male patient complaining of an orbital mass sensation for 6 months […]

Choroid metastasis have been considered the most common ocular malignancy. Early detection allows arrangements to provide tumor reduction and to improve visual quality. Many treatments have been proposed to aim these objectives. This work reviews clinical characteristics, diagnosis and monitoring methods, characteristics of complementary exams, and treatments used in patients with this disease.

Nowadays the use of drugs for prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis (NC) has been questioned in some developed countries, due to the high level of prenatal care. In Brazil, although no official data on the occurrence of NC is available, several recent studies has shown high prevalence of genital infection in childbearing age and pregnant women. This, coupled with the 30% to 50% transmission rate of genital chlamydia and gonococcus from mother to newborn, leads to the conclusion that chemoprophylaxis is […]
