OBJECTIVE: To evaluate trabeculetomies results with peribulbar anesthesia and general anesthesia and to watch the influence by this two techniques in the surgery result. METHODS: It was analyzed charts of 25 patients with uncontrolled glaucoma that undergone trabeculectomy, 11 patients had general anesthesia and 14 with peribulbar anesthesia. It was included in this study pseudophakic patients with glaucoma. We excluded other ocular patologies such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, number of medications and demographic data […]

PURPOSE: Measure of efficacy and the security of intraoperative of mitomycin C (MMC) in the pterygium surgery. METHODS: Realized prospective analysis of 102 patients (204 eyes) divided in two groups submitted intraoperative MMC 0.02 % for 2 minutes or saline solution 0.9%. The patients were available in 1º, 7 º, 21º, 30º, 60º and 90º days of postoperative. RESULTS: The pterygium was more prevalence in females (58,33%). The age various 33 to 69 years. The recidive (9) was in the […]

OBJECTIVE: To verify possible correlations between the biomechanical state of the cornea before surgery and the results of stromal ring segments implant for keratoconus. METHODS: Nineteen eyes of 19 patients with keratoconus were evaluated before and 12 months after stromal ring segment implant surgery. The implant of one or two Ferrara ring segments was performed accordingly to the nomogram, considering corneal thickness, ectasy pattern on topography and astigmatism. The Wilcoxon test was performed to verify the differences between visual acuity […]

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the knowledge base of Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas medical students regarding ophthalmic emergencies (OE). METHODS: Cross-sectional survey among first-year and sixth-year medical students based on data collection obtained through a standardized questionnaire containing a self-evaluation test in which the students had to evaluate their knowledge into “good”, “average” or “insufficient”, and 10 multiple choice questions covering the OE themes. The data were evaluated using measures of central tendency and Student’s T test for assessing the continous […]

PURPOSE: To compare the costs of cataract surgery for a public hospital, the government and the society between the techniques of phacoemulsification (PHACO) and extracapsular cataract extraction (EECP). METHODS: A review based on several clinical studies between 2002 and 2010 at the Ambulatorial Surgical Center of the University of São Paulo. RESULTS: The estimated expenses associated with medical supplies used for surgery were R$ 468.92 and R$ 259.96 in the PHACO and EECP groups respectivelly. The hospital expenditures in the […]

Case report of a patient, with a thick cornea, for Fuchs dystrophy in its early stages, yet with preserved corneal transparency (subclinical corneal edema), associated with normal intraocular pressure (IOP) by Goldman applanation tonometry (GAT), which was however, the diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma on the basis of structural changes of the optic nerve. The tomographic study showed a pattern of spatial pachymetry compatible with subclinical edema. The corneal biomechanical study with ORA (Ocular Response Analyzer, Reichert ®) associated with […]

Retinal nerve fiber evaluation is important in the diagnosis and management of several diseases of the anterior visual pathway. In this report we review the clinical findings and the current techonologies avalilable to analyse the retinal nerve fiber layer. We furthermore review the main findings in several disease of the anterior visual pathways including inflammatory, ischemic, toxics, hereditary, compressive and traumatic optic neuropathies as well as lesion of the optic chiasm, optic tract and lateral geniculate body.
