PURPOSE: Demonstrate the possibility of changing the biomechanical behaviour of cornea stroma by usage of riboflavin associated with non-ultraviolet light. METHODS: Double blind prospective study. Twenty five porcine eyes enucleated 24 hours before the experiment, have been divided on the following groups : Riboflavin 0,1% with irradiation of blue light, Riboflavin 0,1% without irradiation of light , Riboflavin 0,5% with irradiation of blue light, Riboflavin 0,5% without irradiation of light and BSS with irradiation of light. RESULTS: Differences where noticed […]

The exposure to ultraviolet radiation is associated with the beginning of ocular pathologies like keratites, cataract, age-related macular degeneration and pterygium. This radiation is divided in 3 bands according to the wave length: Uv-A (320-400), Uv-B (290-320), Uv-C (100-290). The optic industry developed ultraviolet filters to intraocular lenses, contact lenses and spectacle lenses. PURPOSE: The issue of this work is to estimate the efficacy of ultraviolet contact lenses with high hydration. METHODS: Six types of high hydrated contact lenses from […]

PURPOSE: Compare the wavefront and contrast sensitivity of bilateral pseudophakic patients with aspheric in one eye and spheric intraocular lenses in the other. METHODS: This prospective, comparative, randomized study, double masked, included 32 eyes of 16 patients. A complete ophthalmic evaluation was done before, and after surgery at days 1,3, 7 and 90, and included best corrected visual acuity, the contrast sensitivity, under photopic and mesopic conditions, and aberrometry. Almost all exams were done monocularly with undilated pupils (aberrometry under […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of the body weight and body mass index (BMI) on the intraocular pressure (IOP) peaks and fluctuation in the water-drinking test (WDT) in primary open angle (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) patients, as well as normal eyes (NE). METHODS: Thirty-two eyes of 32 POAG patients, 30 eyes of 30 NTG patients and 20 eyes of 20 normal patients were evaluated in this transversal study. None of the patients were using antiglaucomatous drugs at the […]

We decribed a case of endothelitis that began with keratoneuritis in patient who wore soft contact lens and saline solution with poor hygiene. A 41 years old ,white female suffered from severe pain in her left eye, with microcystic corneal edema and radial keratoneuritis .Culture and corneal byopsia was made, and all tests were negative. The treatment including topical dexametasona 0.1% ophthalmic solution and oral acyclovir successfully controlled the corneal edema and the pain.
