OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of visual acuity in instrumental activities of daily living in elderly patients in follow-up period. METHODS: through own instruments, sixty-four elderly men and women were interviewed in clinical segment at an academic hospital of Campinas/SP. They were then divided into two groups in accordance to the values that were obtained through the measure of the VA: the first group consisted of elderly people with normal vision or close to the normal, and the second group […]

PURPOSE: Evaluate the effect of micro puncture with radiofrequency as treatment of symptomatic patients with bullous keratopathy. METHODS: Prospective study in 10 pacients with syntomatic bullous keratopathy and low vision. Micro puncture with radiofrequency was made in areas of the anterior stromal that had an epithelial descompensation. The evaluation of the patients was realized trough clinical examinations (biomicroscopy, pachymetry, tonometry and esthesiometry) and symptom graduation (pain intensity, foreign body sensation, photophobia and insomnia caused by pain). RESULTS: The comparisons of […]

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative corneal assessment after using two different types of crosslinking equipment METHODS: Two groups of patients, group A with 36 eyes, and group B with 19 eyes, were submitted to the treatment for the stabilization of keractoconus by corneal collagen crosslinking. In group A the equipment used was Crosslink (IROC – Germany), while in group B the equipment was used was Xlink (Opto – Brazil). RESULTS: Corneal reepithelization time, visual acuity, biomicroscopy, topography, corneal tomography and specular microscopy were […]

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topic 2% ibopamine effect in the intraocular pressure (IOP) of eyes with assimetric primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: 15 patients (30 eyes) with primary open-angle glaucoma showing assimetric nerve disease evolution were assessed. We compared in all patients, the ibopamine response and the visual field defect between both eyes. The visual field, to be considered, should have at least 5 dB in MD difference between them. The statistical analysis was done with the Two-Tailed Student Test, […]

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the effects of topic ibopamine in normal eyes, suspects and eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) as well as your efficacy as a provocative test for glaucoma. METHODS: 10 POAG pacients (20 eyes), 10 pacients suspects of POAG (20 eyes) and 10 normal Pacients (20 eyes) were selected and submitted to the topic ibopamine test. The test was considered positive when in one of the measures (30, 45 and 60 minutes) after instillation of 2 drops of […]

The aim of this article is to demonstrate the probable relationship between the recurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis and refractive surgery (LASIK). The case consists in a toxoplasmic retinochoroditis recurrence observed in a 33-year-old patient after a LASIK surgery. Fundoscopy revealed a retinochoroiditis focus in activity in the left eye seventeen days after the surgery, adjacent to an old scar of ocular toxoplasmosis. The authors present findings that reinforce possible causal links between LASIK and the recurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.
