PURPOSE: To evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in sickle cell disease with optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS:The present study selected patients with sickle cell disease (SS) from the Federal University of Goias, and normalvolunteers, controlled by age and sex. Inclusion criteria for both groups were: visual acuity e” 20/30 without correction, intraocular pressure d” 21mmHg and a reliable and normal 24-2 Sita Standard visual field and optic disc. Thereafter, all subjects were submitted to OCT, Fast RNFL strategy, […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate and to correlate the PNS (patient nuclear score) and time and energy (power US) in patients priorto and following phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. METHODS: This is a prospective study. Twenty two consecutive patients (22 eyes) that underwent phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation were enrolled. Full ophthalmologic clinical assessment including Pentacam (Oculus, Pentacam) measurements were performed in all cases prior to surgery (Pre). Excluison criteria were corneal disease or scars. RESULTS: There are statistically significant difference […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of dysfunctional tear syndrome and changes in corneal sensitivity in the preoperative andpostoperative patients undergoing upper blepharoplasty. METHODS: Thirty patients with surgical indication for correction of upper eyelid dermatochalasis in both eyes. Obtained clinical history and general ophthalmologic examination, including tests such as Schirmer’s test, Lissamine Green staining, tear break-up time and fluorescein staining, corneal sensitivity was evaluated using the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer, and subjective test by questionnaire ODSI. The examinations were performed before and after […]

PURPOSE:To evaluate the acceptance of initial spectacle wear by children in their first year at a public primary school, andto identify barriers in the use of optical correction. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. The study group consisted of 62 children in their first year at primary school in the town of Santana do Ipanema (State of Alagoas, Brazil). The children had been referred to ophthalmological examination following visual acuity (VA) screening in “Olho no Olho-2002” (Eye to Eye […]

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of conventional (Ladar, Alcon) and customized (LADARWave, Alcon) retreatment ineyes undergoing conventional primary LASIK. METHODS: Retrospective revision of consecutive clinical report forms of 38 eyes of 38 patients who underwent LASIK retreatment for myopia and astigmatism. The operated eyes were divided into two equal groups. In the first was performed customized retreatment and, in the other, conventional retreatment. The following variables were compared: high contrast visual acuity and manifest refraction. The visual quality was estimated […]

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of IOP after peribulbar anaesthesia with lidocain and bupivacain for cataract surgerywith intraocular lens implantation and evaluate exoftalmometer results after the same procedure. Bupivacain and lidocain are local drugs used for peribulbar anaesthesia. It is known that intraocular pressure (IOP) is an important factor for cataract surgery to avoid complications like vitreous loss and iris hernia. METHODS: Fifty male and female patients, between 48 and 93 years old, with ASA I and II evaluation before […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate the initial treatment of infectious keratitis, evolution and their correlation with laboratory tests. METHODS: 62 cases of infectious corneal ulcers seen in the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual – São Paulo underwent Gramstaining and culture for bacterial and fungus. Treatment with fortified Cefalotine (50mg/ml) and Gentamicin (14mg/ml) or fluoroquinolone 0,3% was started. RESULTS: 21 cultures (33,9%) were positive for bacterial infection and 41 (66,1%) showed no growth. Just one case was positive for fungus(1,61%). In 2 cases […]

Over the last decades, botulinum toxin has been used therapeutically in innumerable diseases. The type A toxin was first approved in 1989 for treating strabismus, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasms in patients over the age of 12. It was observed that in adult patients undergoing treatment for blepharospasm with botulinum toxin, na additional effect of wrinkle reduction appeared, giving rise to studies regarding the cosmetic use of the toxin. Recently, type A botulinum toxin has been approved for aesthetic purposes. This […]

The Ectopia lentis et pupillae is a rare genetic syndrome, congenital, autosomal recessive with variable expression, characterized by ectopia of the lens and the pupil, usually bilateral and symmetrical, but without systemic manifestations. The pathogenesis of this anomaly is still unknown, but there are theories that the change is mesodermal, neuroectodermal, combined or mechanical. This article presents a clinical case of a patient with ectopia lentis et pupillae, describing its clinical and genetic aspects, secondary ocular complications and differential diagnosis.

The iridoschisis is the separation of the brochures of the iris. Rare condition that affects typically both eyes of aged woman. The present study is case report of phacoemulsification in patient with iridoschisis and white cataract. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the left eye was 0.001. The used technique was stop and chop with the use of four hooks of iris and IOL was a folding three pieces hydrophobic acrylic being introduced inside of the capsular bag. Patient evolved […]

The Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare congenital neuro-oculocutaneous disorder. This phacomatosis, also known as encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis, is defined by the classic triad: cutaneous, meningeal and ocular hemangiomas. Despite its typical presentation, incomplete forms are not uncommon. Glaucoma is often present and their pathophysiological mechanisms remain uncertain. Pherhaps this is why the clinical and surgical management of glaucoma associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome (GSSW) is a challenge for the ophthalmic practice, often with disappointing results. We present a literature review with […]
