ABSTRACT Objective: To assess sensitivity of corneal volume, corneal asphericity, and D index in early diagnosis of keratoconus. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study, carried out between December 2018 and October 2020, which analyzed the medical records of 39 patients (78 eyes) diagnosed as keratoconus by a single corneal specialist, using the criteria of Belin-Ambrosio Enhanced Ectasia Display. The collected data were anterior asphericity, posterior asphericity, D index and its parameters (Da, Db, Dt, Dp and Df). The data were entered […]

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the clinical, surgical, and geographic profile of patients submitted to corneal transplantation and followed up at a teaching hospital, and, with a description of the indications for the procedure and mean waiting time. Methods: A cross-sectional and retrospective study, including 40 eyes of 40 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty, from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019, followed up at a teaching hospital in Alagoas State. Data were collected using the surgical records of corneal transplants, […]

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of gabapentin in the management of neuropathic pain in patients with keratoconus, who were treated with fast (10 minutes) epi-off corneal crosslinking (CXL). Methods: This was a prospective, double-blind, randomized study. The sample comprised patients with bilateral progressive keratoconus, aged 12 years or older, who underwent a bilateral epi-off corneal CXL (fast – 10 minutes) procedure. One group was given placebo orally, and the other group received gabapentin 600 mg orally, […]

ABSTRACT Conjunctival concretions are single or clustered lesions frequently found on the palpebral conjunctiva. They are commonly present in older individuals, despite being rarely symptomatic. This case report describes an 83-year-old man with multiple conjunctival concretions, which were surgically treated. The patient was symptomatic on presentation and did not respond to conservative treatment. For this reason, a surgical approach was considered. After wide excision of the conjunctival lesions, a piece of amniotic membrane was fitted using fibrin glue. During follow-up, […]

ABSTRACT Differential diagnoses of acute proptosis are often challenging. History and clinical examination require from ophthalmologists special attention to details, which make it possible to differentiate relatively benign and self-limited conditions from those that will progress to permanent disabilities. We report a 49-year-old female patient who had sudden eye pain, periorbital hematoma and proptosis of the left eye during a commercial flight. She also complained of disabling acute diplopia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography imaging confirmed the diagnosis of […]

ABSTRACT This work aimed to demonstrate the importance of early detection of punctate inner choroidopathy, highlighting the pathophysiology of inflammation and the differential diagnoses among white dot syndromes. Special attention was given to multifocal choroiditis and panuveitis, by demonstrating the peculiar epidemiology in young women, characterizing the typical clinical presentation in ophthalmoscopy, and exploring the advantages and disadvantages of performing the complementary examinations, which are part of the multimodal analysis useful for diagnosis (particularly fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, and […]

ABSTRACT Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome is an inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that can affect the eye. The most common ocular manifestation related to VKH is bilateral diffuse uveitis associated to exudative retinal detachment. Although these patients respond well to steroid pulse therapy, we report a case of a 44-year-old female patient presenting bilateral exudative retinal detachment and clinical diagnosis of VKH, who did not respond to the first cycle of 3-day pulse therapy with methylprednisolone. The exudation was reabsorbed only […]

ABSTRACT The authors report the case of a male adult presenting significant ocular complications and irreversible visual impairment, resulting from the long-term progression and late diagnosis of an iris cyst in the right eye, probably secondary to trauma. The patient was admitted to Hospital Universitário Antonio Pedro with a total corneal opacity that blocked direct visualization of the anterior chamber. Ultrasound biomicroscopy was crucial for the anatomic study, and the patient was submitted to enucleation for aesthetic improvement and clarifying […]

ABSTRACT Implantation of phakic intraocular lenses for refractive purpose is a safe and efficient elective surgical alternative. This option should be considered to electively treat ametropia when laser corneal refractive surgery has higher risk of complications, either due to corneal characteristics or the magnitude of ametropia. This article provides a prospective review of the phakic lenses available in the Brazilian market in 2020 and their characteristics.

ABSTRACT Oncocytoma is a neoplasm rarely observed in clinical practice and reported in the literature, especially when located in the eye. When described in the ocular adnexa, it is most often located in the caruncle. The case of a 74-year-old Caucasian female patient is reported. She complained of visual discomfort in the left eye, and physical examination showed a tumoral lesion in the left caruncle, of moderate volume, presence of neovascularization, and excessive secretion. Surgical excision of the lesion was […]
