OBJECTIVE: To present a model of assessment of the satisfaction level of the attendants in a short-duration course, considering the financial costs and the acquired knowledge. METHODS: By means of the presentation of questionnaires, a transversal study on a promptly accessible sample of ophthalmologists (n=29) who attended the “II Course on Transfer of Skills on Adaptation to Contact Lenses” at Sirio-Libanês Hospital, was carried out. RESULTS: The sample was formed by 29 individuals, being 58,6% men and 37,9% women (one […]

PURPOSE: To evaluate intraocular pressure variation due to postural changing of supine to sitting position and, to correlate this variation with visual field defects in primary open angle and normal tension glaucoma patients, as well as normal eyes. METHODS: Thirty-two eyes of 32 POAG patients, 30 eyes of 30 NTG patients and 20 eyes of 20 normal patients were evaluated in the study. Intraocular pressure was measured at 6 o’clock in supine position and 5 minutes after in sitting position […]

PURPOSE: To assess comparatively the central corneal thickness (CCT), the central corneal endothelial cells density (CECD) and mean area (CECAA), of patients who underwent trabeculectomy (Trab) with or without mytomicyn C (MMC). METHODS: Prospective study. Twenty-nine eyes were divided in two groups: Trab with or without MMC. Ultrasonic pachymetry and non-contact specular microscopy were performed pre-operatively and three and six months after Trab. The mean value of the CECD and the low value of the CCT were used. RESULTS: In […]

INTRODUCTION: Congenital cataract is an important cause of poor visual acuity and amblyopia, with an incidence of 0,4%. Surgical approaches in children present many advances through the years, such as intraocular lenses implantation and others thechniques, wich results in better visual outcomes and prevention of amblyopia. PURPOSE: To report the early outcomes of a series of cases submited to different surgical techiniques for pediatric cataract, in the Tadeu Cvintal Ophthalmology Institute, from January 2004 to January 2005. METHODS: Retrospective study […]

Topiramate is a kind of sulfamate-substituted monosaccharide of oral presentation to be used primarily as an anticonvulsant and it doesn’t have structural relation with any other antiepileptic agents. This wide range antiepileptic drug has been used in the management of migraine, depression and neuropathic pain. Since it was approved as an anticonvulsant, many reports related to ophthalmological adverse effects have been published. The pathological findings include secondary angle closure glaucoma, transitory myopia, ocular hyperemia, uveal effusions, with or without mydriasis.

Macular edema is the leading cause of poor vision in diabetic patients. The mechanism of edema formation is complex and involves biochemical and structural changes. The authors review and update the physiopathologic concepts related to diabetic maculopathy.
