“Dra. Ana María Illescas Putzeys”, Hospital de ojos y oídos “Dr. Rodolfo Robles V. Métodos: Foi realizado […]

Objectives: Determine if retrobulbar optic nerve horizontal diameter measurement or reflectivity correlates with the optic disc excavation diameter relation in glaucoma, considering: measurements correlation, the sensitivity and specificity between the methods and which value has greater sensitivity and specificity to differentiate patients with and without glaucoma. Methods: In a masked study, the optic nerves of 38 patients with open angle primary angle glaucoma and 37 control patients were examined for retrobulbar echographic determination of their A mode (DNA) and their […]

Objective: In the presence of an irregular cornea, like in keratoconus, the corneal epithelium has a different profile “masking” the irregular corneal stroma surface. Topographical analysis without considering the epithelium effect can result in an incorrect assessment, affecting the accuracy of any topography guided treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the “masking” effect of the corneal epithelium on corneal curvature in patients with keratoconus, comparing topographical findings before and after removal of the epithelium during Crosslinking (CXL). Objective: to evaluate how much decreases intraocular pressure (IOP) with TRAVAMED® (travoprost 0,004%) (Germed, Brazil) in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OH) and possible side effects. Methods: controlled and randomized study, it was evaluated 70 eyes of 38 patients with age of 18 years old or more diagnosed with POAG and OH. All the patients had TRAVAMED® as first drop for treatment used once daily (at night) and 30 days later they had IOP measured […]

Objective: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the WINROP algorithm for predicting retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in a population of Portuguese preterm infants. Methods: Retrospective study of all newborns who underwent ROP screening at Hospital Universitário do Porto from January 2010 to May 2016. Gestational age (GA), birthweight and weekly postnatal weight measurements of the newborns, up to a postmenstrual age of 35-36 weeks, were entered in the online application of WINROP, which signals with an alarm the newborns […]

Objective: To describe and analyze the prevalence of visual impairment in municipal public school students in Caceres, Mato Grosso. Methods: A transversal study of 489 school children from the second and third years of elementar school in 13 municipal schools in Caceres, attended between December 2017 and January 2018. Visual acuity was evaluated using Snellen optometric chart and considered normal when higher than 0.7 or 20/30. Results: Of the four hundred and eighty-nine children were evaluated, eighty-five (17.4%) had low […]

The Pierre Robin Syndrome (PRS) consists of a triad of anomalies characterized by micrognathia, glossoptosis and fissure of the palate, usually associated with other syndromes e occasionally associated with ocular variations. In Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS), there is a failure in the lateral rectus innervation by the VI cranial nerve, with anomalous innervation of the lateral rectus by fibers of the III nerve. Even though PRS has already been associated with more than 50 other syndromes, there is not any […]

The present report reports a case of conjunctivitis caused by Ralstonia pichettii in an immunocompetent patient wearing a contact lens. The bacterium isolated from the solution used to disinfect R. pichettii does not belong to the human microbiota but infects immunodepressed patients and is present in aqueous solutions. There is no standardization of sensitivity for this bacterium and few antibiotics have been tested for non-fermenting glucose bacteria. Due to the reduced antimicrobial sensitivity profile demonstrated by R. pichettii, it is […]

We report an atypical case of a 40-year-old woman with complete presentation of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome (VKH) who presented with unilateral serous choroidal detachment 17 years after the diagnosis. The patient complained of pain in the left eye, the ophthalmologic examination revealed visual acuity (VA) equal to hand motion; biomicroscopy revealed a granulomatous inflammatory reaction in the anterior chamber, tonometry was equal to 0 mmhg, and the fundoscopy was impracticable. Serous choroidal detachment was assessed by ocular ultrasonography. The therapeutic approach […]

The present study reports a case of a patient, 38-year-old man, with incomitant strabismus and consequent diplopia, submitted to debilitating surgery with recession and strengthening resection of the right inferior rectus muscle. This surgical technique aims to correct the deviation in its greater incomitence position, without impairing the ocular alignment in the primary position of the eye (PPO). The satisfactory result, in agreement with data of current literature, contributes to make this technique an option in the treatment of challenging […]

Human and animal sporotrichosis is an infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii, which is classified from subacute to chronic. Ocular sporotrichosis has been highlighted due to the epidemic of urban sporotrichosis faced by the state of Rio de Janeiro in the last decade and presents classically as granulomatous conjunctivitis, but atypical forms may occur. This article aims to report two atypical cases of ocular sporotrichosis in immunocompetent patients, both presenting a clinical picture compatible with Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome […]

The Blau syndrome is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease which can also occur sporadically via “de novo” mutation. Overall it has early onset and its classic triad includes arthritis, dermatitis and uveitis. This paper describes clinical and mainly especially ophthalmologic manifestations of a patient diagnosed with Blau syndrome with emphasis on an uncommon finding of corneal subepithelial infiltrates, rarely described in the literature.

Graft-versus-host Disease (GVHD) is a major complication with high morbidity and mortality rates on patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The ocular involvement, named ocular GVHD, may affect all structures of the eyes, but the lacrimal unit (lacrimal glands and ocular surface) is the main target of the inflammatory response mediated by the donor T cells. The development of dry eye disease is the main clinical ocular manifestation, and the association of a variety of therapeutics options is necessary. The […]

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a relaxing endothelium-derived factor and a potent vasodilator that impacts various systems throughout the body. Proven studies of basal ocular blood flow are regulated by NO, being an important regulator of homeostasis, especially within the uveal tissues. The dysfunction of the production associated with glaucoma due to alteration of the optic nerve head associated to the increase of the intraocular pressure by a deficient trabecular meshwork. NO became an attractive molecule for the treatment of glaucoma […]
