PURPOSE: To present refraction results using toric intraocular lens for correcting corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery. METHODS: The study comprised 27 eyes of 18 cataract patients with topographic corneal astigmatism higher than 1.0D and lower than 3.0D, submitted to cataract surgery using the phacoemulsification system, during the period of july to december 2007. RESULTS: Non-corrected visual acuity was >20/40 in 92.59% (25 eyes); post-surgical refraction was plana in 66.61% and + 0.50 in 92.60%. CONCLUSION: the use of toric IOL […]

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the use of topical cyclosporine 0.05% and sodium carboxymethylcellulose 0.5% for the treatment of dry eye disease in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. METHODS: Twenty HIV-positive-patients were selected from the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Hospital. Dry eye diagnosis was based on a dry eye questionnaire (Ocular Surface Disease Index – OSDI®), Schirmer I test, break up time and 1% rose bengal staining of the ocular surface. […]

Paciente do sexo masculino, 34 anos de idade, com baixa da acuidade visual recorrente. Fundoscopia e angiofluoresceinografia demonstraram oclusão venosa retiniana grave.

We report two cases of orbital fat prolapse. One associated with Graves’ ophthalmopathy. Both patients presented similar clinical exams and an increase in intraorbital fat as seen in computerized orbital tomography. The patient with Graves’ ophthalmopathy also presented an increased volume in orbital muscles in the tomography. This work seeks to include Graves’ ophthalmopathy as differential diagnosys for Orbital fat prolapse.

Novas considerações sobre a síndrome de Duane

DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802009000200009

Purtscher’s retinopathy is a condition characterized by loss of vision within hours after an injury, especially thoracic. The term “Purtscher-like retinopathy” is used to describe a similar retinal appearance in a variety of conditions other than trauma. This condition have been reported in acute pancreatitis, lymphoproliferative disorders, chest compression, fat embolization, Valsalva maneuver, after retrobulbar anesthesia, and others. Fundus abnormalities include cotton-wool spots, retinal hemorrhage, non-capillary perfusion areas, and optic disk swelling. In this article we revise the ophthalmoscopic findings, […]
